A challenging idea I’ve encountered at Tabor is the idea that many Christians fall into the trap of ignoring the opportunity to be creative in the way we live our lives. God is, after all, the Creator who imagined and spoke the world into existence, according to the story of creation in Genesis. The idea of creative living is a passion of my lecturer Barry Chant.
“The imagination has too often been neglected in favour of straight-down-the-line, direct theological teaching,” Barry writes in his book Creative Living: How to live the kind of life you’ve always wanted to live.
So in that context, check out the work of a colleague and friend of mine called Peter Riches. He’s a Christian artist who literally thinks in pictures. When he listens to a preacher or reads something inspiring he doesn’t take notes, he sketches. And he’s got a unique passion – he wants to illustrate the entire Bible. How amazing is that! Here’s one of his works below that he’s given me permission to publish here, called “Word become flesh.” I love the outback theme.
Check out Peter’s home page, and other images, here.

Ok, so I’m on a commenting roll, but the kids are 1. asleep in a cot, 2. asleep in front of ABC kids and my TV show hasn’t started yet so I’m taking the moment!
In reference to creative living, I really really like and like to live by the bit in Genesis (19)where God brought the animals to Adam to see what he would name them. Ie. he didn’t know what Adam would name them, and was interested to see what Adam as a creation with free will and creativity in the image of God would do. Adam didn’t say “what do you want me to call them God?” I know that lots of people have issues where they have to give control of their lives to God all the time, but for me because of my life journey and who I am, when I pray “Here I am God, a blank page for you to use etc” God seems to reply “yeah thanks Nic, in response to that I’ve given you the paint and brushes so do you think you could get on and paint something?”
Anyway, that’s the metaphor/image etc I use in my relationship with God re. Creativity.
